Noble Corporation celebrates its 88th anniversary in 2009. Very few companies, and even fewer drilling contractors, can claim this milestone. The Company's proactive style of management has guided it from a one rig operation in 1921 to one of the largest offshore drilling contractors in the world today. The Company's growth since the time of its spin-off from Noble Affiliates in 1985 has come about through a series of strategic acquisitions of offshore drilling assets and ancillary, non-capital intensive businesses around the world.
These acquisitions follow the goals originally set forth in 1985 - to gain a strong position in foreign drilling markets, to expand marine drilling operations and to move into new markets and segments of the industry, preparing the Company to take advantage of an improved marketplace.
Noble has been successful by maintaining a conservative financial policy, positioning itself to adapt to the ever changing world energy market and meeting customers' needs and demands. At the same time, the Company has assimilated an experienced and well trained work force. Lloyd Noble set the tone for the Company's employee-oriented attitude in A Legacy for Management when he said "It has been my further belief that it was the duty of the management, and to that end my mind has been constantly surcharged, to so build the organization that when men evidenced capabilities to give them a part of my work and find other tasks to do which might result in increased benefits to the organization, or step aside; and, on the other hand, should death intervene, to have matters so arranged that I would be missed personally, while the machinery continued to function smoothly."— from the will of Lloyd Noble.
Noble will continue to perpetuate this heritage by providing the highest quality service and performance; which its customers, employees and shareholders have come to know and expect.
Corporate Safety Policy
People are our most important asset-- their safety, our greatest responsibility. In conjunction with this statement, the safety of our employees is a major consideration in the operation of our rigs. Management and supervisors will be accountable for the safety of the employees working under their supervision, and will be expected to conduct operations in a safe manner at all times.
The Company will provide and maintain safe and healthful working conditions for all employees at all times. It will provide safe working equipment, necessary personnel protection -- and, in case of injury, provide the best available first-aid and medical services.
No job is so important that we cannot take the time to do it in a safe manner. All Company personnel, regardless of position, have authority to suspend any operation, which in their opinion constitutes a hazard to the life and health of any person. They also have authority to suspend any operation which may present a hazard to the environment or to surrounding communities.
Noble Environmental Policy
All of us have the responsibility of being good stewards of the environment. Our collective efforts will assure that the current generation and subsequent generations will enjoy the benefits of these endeavors through a cleaner environment. Obviously, to preserve and improve our environment takes the commitment by individual citizens, the public sector, and the industry. Noble’s commitment will include:
- Use of environmentally sensitive products when available and practicable.
- Work with governmental agencies and industry groups in developing practical, economically feasible and scientifically based environmental laws and regulations and industry standards.
- Minimize the waste generated by the company through reviewing and establishing recycling programs whenever they are feasible, use careful inventory control, monitor product use at the work site, and to the extent practicable and appropriate, not make waste in the first place.
- Focus on prevention of pollution, especially eliminating any accidental release of pollutants to the environment. Should such releases occur, respond quickly and effectively to control and report these incidents.
- Provide appropriate training programs for our employees, which underscores each individual's responsibility for sound company environmental management.
- Work towards continual improvement of environmental performance through setting objectives and targets that can be audited to monitor full compliance with company policy and governmental laws and regulations.
- Encourage employees to commit to provide feedback on measures to be taken by the company to improve its overall environmental effort, as well as recycling at work and home.
This effort must be a collective effort by all Noble employees. Managers have the fundamental duty to assure employees are informed on health, safety and environmental issues affecting them and their operations. Specific procedures for achieving adherence to these goals are critical. Every employee is encouraged to inform management promptly of any deviation from these goals to assure that we are in compliance and are following directives of these objectives
