A week later, the editor at last received a fax from the journalist. Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well. However, he had at last been allowed to send a fax in which he informed the editor that the he had been arrested while counting the 1,084 steps leading to the fifteen-foot wall which surrounded the presidents palace.
一周之后，编辑终于接到记者的传真。那个可怜的记者不仅被捕了，而且还被送进了监狱。不过，他终于获准发回了一份传真。在传真中他告诉编辑，就在他数通向15英尺高的总统府围墙的1084级台阶时，被抓了起来。
（1）not only … but(also) … 不仅…而且…
Not only had the poor man been arrested, but he had been sent to prison as well.
从这个句子中可以看到Not only后使用了倒装的结构。所以需要注意：
①not only … but (also)用于句首时，需要使用倒装句
Not only is this student intelligent, but hardworking. 这个学生不仅聪慧而且勤奋。
②not only与but (also)后的成分需要一致
如上面举的例子，not only 后的intelligent和 but后的hardworking词性和成分一致。均用于修饰student。
③not only… but also与 as well as的区别
Think of others as well as yourself. 不仅要想到自己，也要想到别人。
当使用as well as时，强调的重点在于前者。在上面例句中，强调的就他人。但当使用not only … but also时，则相反。
（2）lead to表示导致,通向
lead作动词表示领导，同样可以表示该意思的有：
direct: 指为某人指方向，但自己不一定亲自引路，也可表示指导一群人的事或活动。
conduct: 正式用词，指引导某人去某处，强调亲自带领；也强调监督管理一群有共同目的或目标的人。
guide: 可与conduct换用，指引导者与被引导者双方彼此合作，共同努力的关系。
pilot: 从原义为飞机、轮船导航借喻为指亲自带领某人去某处。
lead: 指走在前面给某人引路或带路人共同去达到某一目标。用于抽象意义时，指在某项活动或运动中起主导和组织作用。
而在词组中，lead to含有领导的意思，表示领导着通向…之意
Diligence is the path leading to happiness. 勤劳是获得幸福的途径。
第二个含意是导致
Worries and tenseness can lead to insomnia.忧虑和紧张会导致失眠。
