一、stop作名词，表示停止、中止、停车站。
The bus came to a sudden stop.公交车突然停了下来。
We put a stop to their fight just now.刚才我们中止了他们的争论。
The bus stop is over there.公交车站有那儿。
二、stop作及物动词，可以接名词，代词、动名词或动词不定式
1. stop something
They stoppped a car and asked how to get to the hospital.他们拦下了一辆汽车，问去医院怎么走。
We have stopped our actions because of the accident.
由于事故我们已经停止了行动。
Your brother is fighting with another boy.You must stop him.
你弟弟在和另一个男孩打架，你必须阻止他。
2.Stopdoing sth 停止做某事（强调停止正在做的事）
Stop talking!The teacher is coming.不要说话啦！老师来了。
We stopped playing football when we saw you on the playground.当我们看到你们在操场上时就停止了踢球。
The baby stopped crying as soon as he heard his mother’s voice.不孩子一听到他妈妈的声音就不哭了。
3.stop ...from ( doing) sth 阻止……做……
The police stopped the car from running ahead because its overspeed.
由于超速，警察阻止这辆汽车继续行驶。
People plant lots of trees to stop the wind from blowing away the earth.人们种了很多树阻止风把泥土吹走。
三、stop作不及物动词
Stop!停下来！
She is too tired ,she has to stop to have a rest .
她太累了，必须停下来休息。
They stopped to smoke a cigarette. 他们停下来,抽了根烟。
注意：stop to do 强调停下（某事）去做另一件事，而Stopdoing sth强调停止正在做的事。两者容易混淆，要注意区分。
